Memorial Day Weekend. In Steamboat you will never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you this weekend. Mostly it is rain or snow. It seems Memorial Day Weekend is notoriuos for it’s bad weather. However this one seems to shapping up to be a little different, but I am sure I just jinxed it and now will snow/rain all weekend. Either way the Creekside is ready for you as is Steamboat.

This weekend the patio will open and Soda Creek is running nicely so it should be perfect for a relaxing meal outside. Inside we debuted our new chairs on Wednesday morning so you are quaranteed a cushy seat which will be good after a weekend of Mountain Biking! As for the staff this is the summer employees time to shine, hopefully all of their intense training has paid off and they are ready.

I will be there on Saturday so come say hello. One of our old staff members Sara James (now married as Crow) will be stopping by. I can’t wait to see Sara. She was a wonderful employee and good friend. When Sara was an employee I convinced her to join Jessy, Carri and I in the 24 Hours of Rage in Sage Mountain Bike Race in Gunnison. It would be her first mountain bike race and first night time ride ever. To make it even more fun for her the night included record lows for Gunnison. Sara survived and continued to speak to me after this, Oh and we came in second! She did inform me that she has switched to road biking. Which is great fun to.

So after your meals at the Creekside or before here are some of my favorite Memorial Day events; 32nd Yampa River Festival for a full list of events go to My favorite parts are the Crazy Dog contest at 2:30PM and the 3:00PM Freestyle Rodeo both on Saturday at Charlie’s Hole by the Library. On Sunday the pros go between Noon and 3PM at Charlies Hole. I like to sit on the side opposite of the library, you can get real close to wave and feel safe. It makes for a great view. Prior to having children I kayaked and believe me it is not easy. Being upside down in the freezing cold Yampa is one thing, then ad the sound of the wave slamming and it makes for a huge rush. However Kayaking is not a family friendly sport so my boat is on hold till the kids get older!

For the kids this weekend it is peak butterfly time. Head to the Botanical Garden and let them chase the butterflies while you sit and absorb their fun. One of the best assests to Steamboat is the Yampa Valley Core Trail. It can become a full day adventure. From the Core trail you can spend the day throwing rocks in the river, walking through the botanical garden and visting the many parks (5, possibly more). And lets not forget the Alpine Slide. The Howler opens this weekend. It is a little pricey but the money goes towards the Winter Sports Club which is a great assest to to the community. They slow the chair lift way down so you can look around and have some special time on the lift with your child before they leave you in the dust on the slide!

I could go on and on but more will come in next weeks post. MARATHON. Cheers, Kelly
